Okay fam, today I’d love to chat with you about something that I personally find super useful in styling in general, especially in streetwear. I'm talking about layering.
When done thoughtfully, it can transform a basic outfit into something that feels carefully curated, and in this article, I want to break down all the key points to do it right.
When done thoughtfully, it can transform a basic outfit into something that feels carefully curated, and in this article, I want to break down all the key points to do it right.
Its main purpose is making your outfit both practical and comfortable, helping you feel good in what you're wearing from morning to night - whether the temperature goes up or down during the day. Plus, it's one of the most fun parts of styling because it gives you the chance to experiment and add more depth to your look.
Let's get into it.
Essentials to Build a Layered Fit
I've put together all the key points to become masters at layering, and of course, I've picked out some style icons to get inspired by along the way. Every one of you Gs is more than welcome to share your own ideas in the comments or under the dedicated post on our IG page.
Start with the Base
Why starting with the base? Because it's easier, or better, less complicated. Whether it's a graphic tee, long sleeves, or even a plain white tank, just keep it simple. If you're like me and shop in a super intentional way, you'll probably be a fan of basic plain pieces, that's exactly what we're talking about here.
Personally, I prefer basics in black or white cotton because they work all year round and the fabric blends effortlessly with other materials without doing too much.
Two crucial factors to keep in mind at this stage:
-
The Fit: This layer will have more layers on top, so you don't want it too oversized or too tight. A regular fit or slightly oversized works best to build the final shape.
-
The Quality: When something is minimal, every little detail stands out. If your base piece is low quality, it'll mess up the whole look. Go for 100% cotton with a medium weight - not too thin, not too thick.
Add Some Depth
The middle layer is where your personality kicks in. Hoodies, crewnecks, and track tops work perfectly. Oversized fits and mixing fabrics like cotton with fleece can add texture to your outfit.
Layering means that every layer should be visible. Make sure the second layer is shorter than the first, letting the hem of your tee peek out underneath.
The fit should also follow a natural progression: the middle layer should be more oversized than the base, but less than the outer layer.

Outer Layer: The Finishing Touch
This is where everything comes together. Bomber jackets, puffer vests, or jersey jackets can tie the whole outfit together. If the jacket doesn’t have a hood, styling it with a hoodie underneath (like Philly Santosuosso does in the following pic) can add that final touch.
Again, always think about length. The jacket should cover just enough without making the whole outfit look unbalanced.

Just a Few More Details Not to Sleep On
Colors
Try to keep the palette consistent. Neutral tones like black, grey, or beige always work as a base, while one bold accent piece can add personality without clashing. If one of your layers has a loud graphic, keep everything else low-key, alternating bold colors with neutrals - one layer on, one layer off.
Accessories
Accessories are our best friends in layering. Details like jewelry, socks, a cap, or beanie can pull the whole outfit together. Bags and sunglasses can add that finishing touch to our overall look.
When it comes to bags, we all love a mini bag, but honestly, they’re not the move for a full layered look. They can throw off the vibe and make the outfit feel kinda unbalanced. Big bags, though? Way better. Especially the ones you can sling over your shoulder even with a bulky bomber jacket. They just bring the whole fit together and keep things looking on point.

Focus on the Bottom
The lower half of our outfit makes up 50% of the whole vibe. In layered fits, pants should balance out the upper part. When our outfit has two or more layers, baggy pants help even out the volume. Denim jeans or workwear trousers definitely rank high on my top bottom choices for layered looks.
Ultimately, layering is all about having fun and experimenting. Check out our selection below, we picked out the best items that would absolutely hit in a layered look. If you're looking for more inspo, you're always welcome on our IG page.
